Background
Greenpeace India campaigns to protect India’s forests for clean air and water, to promote renewable energy especially solar power, to prevent the dangerous impacts of climate change and nuclear power, for safe food and ecological farming and to protect freedom of speech. They also provide tools and resources for citizens to plan their own campaigns on issues they care about.

Greenpeace India does not accept donations from governments or corporations, and relies on the donations of thousands of Indian citizens to fund their campaign work. In addition, they are supported by a national network of Indian volunteers as well as 7.5 lakh online and 19 lakh mobile activists,as of March 2017, as part of their efforts to strongly focus their work on climate change and sustainable agriculture.

Greenpeace India is an independent organisation registered in India, connected to a network of other Greenpeace offices in over 55 countries. It shares the name and the vision of Greenpeace globally, and is guided by the same belief in non-violence, personal action, bearing witness, global solutions and financial independence. 

Role & Responsibilities
​​The Engagement Director will be responsible for designing and driving the audience engagement strategy behind all the activities of Greenpeace in India by integrating communications and mobilisation activities, and creating opportunities for a variety of audiences to take action towards delivering campaign outcomes and concrete change. The primary purpose of this job is to maximise the organisation’s ability to connect with people and deepen their engagement with their campaigns, in order to achieve key organisational objectives.

This is an exciting time to join Greenpeace in India, particularly in this senior leadership role, as they are currently finalising a long term framework that lays special emphasis on changing mindsets through public engagement as a key element to achieve environmental conservation.

The Engagement Director will lead a team of media and digital experts in developing and delivering an engagement strategy which will complement Greenpeace’s campaigns and fundraising. The position will also be responsible for strengthening and building a team with the necessary skills and oversight to create bold public-engagement strategies, and innovative content to gain mindshare for the activities that are core to Greenpeace in their fight to protect the environment and the planet that we live in.

The role will be part of the Senior Management Team and report to the Executive Director of Greenpeace in India.

Main Responsibilities will include the following:
  • Strategic Direction:
  1. Designing and implementing an Engagement Strategy that includes traditional and digital media, volunteer and community engagement plans to ensure a growing online and offline supporter base.
  2. Working with campaign project teams to ensure that the engagement potential of campaigns is identified and maximised, and to provide advice and leadership in this area.
  3. Establishing and delivering upon ambitious goals to increase recruitment and deep and continued engagement of supporters across all channels (e.g., email, social media, off-line and online).
  4. Keeping up-to-date with developments in the digital and NGO sectors, ensuring Greenpeace is ahead of the curve in key communications initiatives.
 
  • ​Audience Management:
  1. Improving the responsiveness, depth and quality of supporter relationships through strong communication through all channels.
  2. Collaborating with fundraising teams to deepen relationships with non-financial and financial supporters.
  3. Developing and applying metrics to set out Greenpeace’s ambition and measure progress.
  4. Taking responsibility for testing, monitoring and improving performance of offline and online mobilisation work including reporting this analysis to the Executive Director and the Senior Management Team.
  5. Building and managing relationships with external suppliers.
  6. Ensuring quality control by setting standards, mentoring and advising, planning training programmes and helping assess staff and evaluate projects.
  7. Collaborate and lead on global Engagement initiatives as needed.
  8. Maintaining a detailed knowledge of Greenpeace campaigns and the position of the organisation in India.
 
  • Team Management:
  1. Leading a team of passionate and dedicated Engagement staff and encouraging a collaborative working environment.
  2. Fostering and supporting a culture of creativity and innovation in the Engagement team and across the organisation to deliver the innovative communications, offline engagement and digital engagement work for which Greenpeace is known for.
  3. Providing pastoral management to team members, including evaluation, and skills development.
  4. Providing task management to specific staff, including: allocating work, setting objectives and standards for tasks, monitoring performance on tasks, evaluating results and giving feedback.
  5. Developing and maintaining relationships with Greenpeace international colleagues, and collaborating on projects.
  6. Internal Leadership:
  7. As an SMT member, fulfill the responsibilities as agreed to in the Terms of Reference for SMT members.
  8. Playing an active role as a member of the Senior Management Team (Director level), maintaining strong, productive relationships with other managers and team leaders.
  9. Acting as a champion for audience-focused communications throughout the organisation.
  10. Play an active role in campaign project teams to advise and lead on the Engagement elements of each campaign.
  11. Ensuring that the Engagement team understands and refines relationships with key audiences.
  12. Supporting fundraising strategies.
  13. Identifying opportunities for fundraising and ensure all engagement staff have a fundraising objective.
 
  • Budgeting:
  1. Ensuring Engagement budgets are developed, monitored and implemented as part of the organizational budget, and facilitates reporting to the ED, SMT and the Board.
 
  • Human Resources (HR):
  1. Contributing to the development and implementation of the HR strategy of Greenpeace in India.
  2. Ensuring that HR policies, procedures and structures are followed to recruit, induct, train, retain and support the Engagement team in order to achieve the objectives of Greenpeace in India.
  3. Ensuring that high quality training is available for the Engagement team.
  4. Set up and evaluate individual objectives with team members, and apply all HR policies, including monthly and annual performance feedback for direct line-managed staff.
 
  • Compliance:
  1. Ensuring compliance with all relevant requirements/procedures of Greenpeace in India, Greenpeace International, and external agencies are followed, in order to optimize the security of the organization, the health and safety of team members (duty of care), and protect the image and integrity of Greenpeace.
 
  • Reporting:
  1. Preparing monthly reports for the Executive Director. Report as required to the SMT and in consultation with the Executive Director to the Board of Greenpeace in India.
 
  • Greenpeace International:
  1. Organising and maintaining a regular communication flow and liaison with the Greenpeace International and Global Engagement Leaders, other Greenpeace International Functional Unit Heads, as well as other National and Regional Office (NRO) Engagement Directors and relevant staff.
  2. Represent Greenpeace in India to Greenpeace International and Engagement Directors of other NROs.
 
  • Others:
  1. Perform other duties or projects as requested or assigned by the Executive Director.
  2. Play a pivotal role in the organization’s communication to the public.
  3. Represent Greenpeace at high level external fora from time to time.​

Prerequisites
  • 10 years experience
  • Management,team leading, expertise in digital and media engagement must​
  • Qualification and requirements are as follows:
  1. Masters/Post graduate qualifications in marketing, advertisement, communications, media studies / journalism is desirable.
  2. A mature and seasoned professional with 5 years of experience working in large multicultural organisations.
  3. At least 5 years’ experience in a management position and directly leading teams.
  4. At least 10 years’ experience in creative marketing for consumer products and/or advocacy communications for individuals. Experience in communications and offline/online mobilisation, and a passion for digital communications technology.
  5. Understanding of the media and political landscape.
  6. Understanding of supporter segmentation and supporter journeys / loyalty strategies.
  7. Knowledge and understanding in design and implementation of communication and mobilisation strategies.
  8. Fluency in written and spoken English is imperative. Hindi and any other Indian language will be an added advantage.
  9. Track record of managing complex teams, multiple projects and dealing with diversity.
  10. Ability to set high standards of work performance and goals which are results driven.
  11. Willingness to travel frequently to all campaign locations.
  12. Strong people skills, strong communications skills, strong organizational and overall management skills.
  13. Ability to prioritize and to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  14. Strong understanding of, and buy-in to Greenpeace campaigns and a commitment to Greenpeace’s values of direct action, non-violence, internationalism, independence, and a determination to protect the natural world and promote peace
