  • December 1st, 2016 to March 10th, 2017 (100 days)
  • January 20th, 2017 to March 10th, 2017 (50 days)

Background

This program, as a part of the “Project to Support the Nurturing of Media Arts Creators” organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan (Bunka-cho), is an artist in residence program that provides an opportunity to 3 outstanding young artists in Media Arts (Media Geijutsu) including Media art, Video, Game, Animation, Manga, etc. from around the world to come to Tokyo and create new works while directly interacting with Japanese creators and Media Arts culture in Japan. It aims to promote both the creation of excellent works and a better understanding of Japanese Media Arts.

Program
  • Creation of a new work: Participants will begin a new work while in Japan and present the finished work or one part of a work in progress at the end of their stay.
  • Education/training: Participants will present the progress of their work being created as part of the program and will receive guidance from accomplished Japanese experts on a regular basis.
  • Visits/exchange events: Participants will visit Media Arts creators and studios and participate in exchange events with artists and students enrolled in art programs at educational institutions.

Prerequisites 

  • Reside outside of Japan and be a citizen of a country other than Japan
  • Fulfil one of the following terms:
    • Have received Awards or had their work chosen as a Jury Selection at the Japan Media Arts Festival.
    • Have had one of their works selected at an international art festival, film festival, game show, comic festival or similar event.
AND:
  • be 20 to 35 years (not definite, as applicant’s previous career will be considered)
  • Be able to speak either English or Japanese at least well enough to communicate in everyday situations.
  • Be in good health.
  • Have access to the equipment necessary to participate in a remote interview (i.e. a computer capable of connecting to the internet and using Skype).

Application Process
  1. Fill out the Application Form 
  2. Submit documents under 3) to 7) by email
  3. Proof of received awards or selections (either of the following documents/materials to be submitted by email:
    • Proof that the applicant have had received awards or had their work chosen as a by the Jury Selection at the Japan Media Arts Festival; or
    • Proof of a work having been displayed or screened at an international art festival, film festival, game show, comic festival or similar event (e.g. a copy of the list of displayed works in a festival catalogue). Please make sure that the proof shows the event’s internationality (i.e. proof that it displays/features works from countries other than your own).
  4. Reference materials describing the work to be created as part of this program. It is preferable that applicants submit documents which make it possible to understand plans for the work in detail.
  5. Proof of age and citizenship (e.g. a photocopy of your passport)
  6. Website from which representative works can be viewed or other reference materials about previous work
  7. A scanned file of the hand-signed agreement form which can be downloaded from the link below: Consent Form 2016

*If your circumstances do not allow you to upload video to the Internet. submission via DVD or other video media may be accepted. In such cases their office must be contacted in advance.

Selection:
A selection committee composed of experts in this field will make two rounds of selections (the first based on applications, the second based on interviews conducted via the Internet) to arrive at a preliminary list of candidates to be invited to participate in the program. Those selected will be contacted by the end of October and once all conditions of participation have been confirmed the selection will be formally announced.

Schedule:
Application period: June 13th, 2016 to August 19th
(Application forms and all required documents/materials must be received by the office by August 19th, 2016)
Selection period: Latter half of August, 2016 to latter half of October, 2016
​Publishing of the results: Beginning of November, 2016
