Background
|
Roots Collective is an nonprofit organisation based in Ladakh working primarily on heritage activation. The team gathers people from various backgrounds like architects, designers, social workers; each one is an explorer in his own way.
All are driven by the power of creativity to make the most of what is already there. They value tangible and intangible patrimony both. Identifying potential in abandoned resources, we seek to maximise it to ensure an adaptive & proactive use An old site falling apart represents for us multiple opportunities: -investigate on its history, and more importantly the stories of people around. -question the purpose of conservation, offering alternatives to oblivion - sharing knowledge, experiment & awake scopes of action through educative workshops -share our vision, reflect & debate during social events Zanskar Padum- largest town of Zanskar is located at an elevation of 13000 feet, south of Leh. Wide open valleys and scarce landscape greets the visitor as one approaches the town. The site of the proposed construction workshop is on the eastern-most part of the town, right below the town gompa. Primarily inhabited by Buddhists and small population of Ladakhi Muslims. Rehmania - Guest-house, library, café and social place Project initiated in the summer of 2015, Roots Collective is designing and constructing this guest house cum social place for the village of Padum. Total built- up area: 30,000 sq feet On-going construction site, built with sun-dried mud bricks, rammed earth and stone. Tremendous opportunity for students/professionals to learn earth construction & local construction technology of Ladakh. Role & Responsibilities
|
Manage The Green Batti Project - India's largest one-on-one mentoring program which pairs educated professionals with under-resourced youth. Often, children from under resourced communities lack positive adult relationships that offer them a refreshing perspective and unyielding motivation. These children are bound by their prevailing socio-economic conditions, without any exposure to what lies outside those bounds.
The Green Batti Project's mentoring curriculum focuses on 'employability' and 'adult life readiness' as its impact areas. Started in 2014, the program is currently closing its second mentoring cycle with presence in Mumbai & Ahmedabad. Pratham, Teach for India, The United Nations and Tata Institute for Social Sciences are some of their partners. |
