Background
Shanghai is one of the world's most exciting places for contemporary art and the artists who create it. Workshops, theaters, galleries and museums light up, transforming the city into an avant-garde experiment in imagining the future.
The Swatch Art Peace Hotel artist residency invites artists from around the world to apply online for a residency in this extraordinary city. Different forms of art are welcome to the artist residency, to explore the contemporary arts in China's most vibrant city: photography, music, filmmaking, writing, dancing, painting and conceptual art.

The applications are reviewed by an international committee whose efforts ensure that a broad range of artistic disciplines, styles and national origins is represented. The selection process aims to integrate artists in a spirit of openness and curiosity about creativity in its diverse forms and contexts.

At present, the members of the Artist Selection Committee are: Nayla Hayek, Chair of the Board of Directors, Swatch Group; Nick Hayek, CEO, Swatch Group; Esther Grether, art collector; George Clooney, Actor; François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO, Kering;Mikhail Kusnirovich, Russian Entrepreneur and Chairman of the Strategic Development Committee of the Department Store GUM; Sir Francis Yeoh, Chairman of YTL Group.

Known and unknown artists are invited to stay and work for a period of 3 up to 6 months in one of the 18 workshops and apartments. They meet to exchange ideas, prepare and enjoy meals together, talk about their work and life in Shanghai, plan new projects and share their visions.

The artists-in-residence are accommodated in the Hotel at the invitation of Swatch Group, which for its part only asks that they leave a “trace” of their stay.

The Swatch Art Peace Hotel artist residency aims to contribute in a significant manner to the cultural and artistic development of Shanghai. Artists will benefit from their exposure to an international public at the most prestigious location in Shanghai, and it is hoped that the artist residency will serve as an open door to the world, a permanent invitation to engage in cultural exchange.

  • Every artist is entitled to hold an 'Open Studio' in their own working space at the end of the stay. However no artist residency exhibition will be held in the hotel.
  • The stay at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel artist residency (including breakfast) is free of charge for artists-in-residence.
  • At the end of your residency, you will solely be asked to leave a 'trace' that will represent you in the Virtual Museum of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel's website.
Details to Apply
- Only online applications will be accepted. 
- Register first by creating an account on their website. Follow the registration process.
- You will receive an email with a link. Click on the link to confirm your registration.
- A second email will be sent to you confirming the creation of your account.
- Now you can log in and apply by filling in all the sections in English. 
- Convince the jury with your individual and personal motivation, explaining what makes you different from other candidates and providing details on your planned work in Shanghai. Consider the following tips:
  • Present your project in as much detail as possible, explaining its relation to Shanghai
  • Present yourself consistently throughout the whole application
  • Upload only relevant and most representative files
  • Choose availability knowing that a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months are obligatory
  • For group applications, each member has to apply individually. Group size is limited to 3 persons.
- Submit your application. You'll be asked to pay a fee of 30.- CHF which will be entirely donated to Médecin Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).
- Your application will then be reviewed. Please allow about 8 weeks for the process. 
- You will be contacted in any case, whether you're invited or not.
- Should you be invited, the Swatch Art Peace Hotel team will contact you to organize the travel to Shanghai
