Background
Set up in 2008, Music Basti connects at-risk children with musicians, aiming to nurture confidence through a creative and joyful music-learning experience.

Introduced in 2013, Music Basti's ReSound program is designed to enable children to write and perform their own original songs that tell the stories of their communities. Through a mixture of bespoke oral musical training, songwriting and performing, the ReSound curriculum builds and encourages a variety of life-skills such as confidence, creativity and leadership which are vital to well-rounded child development

Roles & Responsibilites
At Music Basti, musicians are trained in the ReSound curriculum to teach at-risk children in classrooms in government and low-income schools. Teachers work in pairs, and are responsible for working with a fixed group of about 20 students for 8 months. Lessons are twice a week, running between the months of July 2017 and February 2018. Teachers participate in monthly teacher-training activities with Music Basti, events and/or performances, and also participate in the annual ReSound concert in February 2018

Prerequisites
  • You need to be 18 years of age to be eligible to apply, or have completed Std. XII.
  •  Musicians (amateur, semi-professional or professional, trained in Hindustani or Western music) are invited to apply. Music Basti seeks musicians motivated to work with at-risk children in communities across the NCR. The program is especially geared towards individuals who have experience or a keen interest in teaching and education, enabling transformation in classrooms and teaching music. Teachers will be trained in implementing interactive pedagogical approaches in their classrooms.
  •  It is preferred that applicants are proficient in either/and  vocals (Hindustani or western); instrument (professional/formal music education is not mandatory, but is preferred).
  • It is preferred but not necessary that applicants have prior music teaching experience (employment or voluntary); work experience with at-risk children or youth / NGOs (employment or voluntary).
  • To be eligible, you need to make sure your application is complete and submitted by 21st May 2017. Music Basti will not accept applications submitted after this date, or any incomplete applications. 
  • Make sure your YouTube video submission (as per the requirement listed in Section III and IV of the application form) is in a High Definition (preferably highest resolution possible) playable format. ​

             IMPORTANT DATES:
  1. Interview & audition dates*: May 26th, 27th & 28th, 2017
  2. Announcement of selected Teaching-Artists**: June 1st, 2017
  3. Training dates for selected Teaching-Artists***:
             June 10th & 11th: Full days
             June 17th & 18th: Full days
             June 24th & 25th: Full days
             July 1st & 2nd: Full day.
​       4.  Teaching calendar for June 2017 - March 2018:- Two lessons per week, weekdays, July 2017 - February 2018, as                       per a fixed schedule.
        5.​ Mid-Year Concert, December 2017 (date to be confirmed)- Annual ReSound Concert, February 2018 (date to be                      confirmed)
        6. Additional performance and workshop commitments will be mutually agreed upon
        7. Only applicants whose application forms are selected will be shortlisted and contacted for an interview on one of                    these dates. Please ensure you are available on any of these date(s) in case selected for an interview.

***Attendance at all training sessions is mandatory.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Selected teachers gain full scholarship and access to Music Basti's 14-day Teacher-Training program through the year, as well as a paid teaching-placement to teach twice-a-week with a Delhi based low-income/government school or community based centre.
  • The ReSound teacher-training program begins with an 8-day orientation to prepare teachers before they are placed in assigned classrooms or communities. Following this, monthly training sessions are held.
  • The training program content includes: understanding life-skill oriented outcomes in the classroom; different approaches to music education and pedagogy; group teaching and classroom management; using other arts such as theatre or dance; Western and Hindustani music theory; workshops in rhythm, voice, ensemble and group singing; lesson planning with students and how to evaluate progress. ​​
