Young Filmmakers Fellowship 2016-17
by Media Collective

Media Collective Logo

Duration

9 months (August 2016 to April 2017)

Background

Media Collective is a group of media practitioners operating outside the rationale of mainstream media, with an emphasis on understanding the changing discourses around rights and justice. The space encourages a critical reflection of the political context amongst practitioners from varied art forms. The Media Collective is an independent media initiative facilitated by Programme for Social Action, a solidarity and support organization for people’s movements.

Media Collective is an experiment of individuals and groups using diverse creative mediums as the mode of interaction with people’s struggles and politics. In the process, it hopes to evolve a creative spirit and expression, as well as a community of media practitioners who can provide an alternative to mainstream media practices. Media Collective's work is towards creating a journal of visual documentation and creative non-fictions from the ground.

Fellowship
Why this Fellowship?
Lack of resources, censorship and a corporatised media environment offer limited opportunities for aspiring young filmmakers to meaningfully explore political themes and radical movements in film.  In this light, it is increasingly evident that independently-curated media content hosted by collectives is the much needed radical shift in media production and distribution. The Young Filmmakers Fellowship aims to strengthen ongoing efforts in this direction by supporting engaging work in film.

Fellowship Features:
  • The Young Filmmakers Fellowship will financially assist 5 projects, with a sum of Rs. 1 lakh each. The proposals can be individual or in partnerships.
  • Selected participants will participate in two workshops during the period of the fellowship, facilitated by senior filmmakers as a mentorship platform for developing their projects.
  • A screening of the films made by the fellows will be arranged in Delhi at the end of the Fellowship.

Proposals are invited on, but not limited to, themes such as:
  • Body and Resistance
